How a kaleidoscope works
A kaleidoscope rests on one simple idea: two mirrors set at a fixed angle reflect everything between them over and over. The reflections feed each other, so a single smear of colour closes into a circular pattern. It is not magic, it is geometry — and once you know the angle you can predict the result.
Two mirrors and the angle between them
The angle between the mirrors decides how many segments the pattern has. The rule is simple: divide 360 degrees by the mirror angle. A 60-degree angle gives you six arms, a 30-degree angle gives twelve. The narrower the angle, the more arms you get — but each arm shows less of the source, so more symmetry does not automatically mean more detail.
Object chamber versus live camera
A classic kaleidoscope ends in a chamber holding glass fragments, beads or oil; rolling the tube shuffles them and the pattern renews itself. In the digital version that chamber is replaced by the small square the camera sees. Turning the phone does exactly what turning the tube did: the source changes and the pattern is rebuilt on the spot.
Types of symmetry
In radial symmetry the arms rotate around a single centre — the classic kaleidoscope look. In triangular symmetry the plane is tiled with equilateral triangles and the pattern spreads out like an endless mosaic. Grid symmetry repeats a mirrored square and feels like printed fabric. Spiral adds a twist to each reflection, so the image appears to flow toward the centre.
