The best textures and surfaces
In a kaleidoscope the quality of the source texture decides everything. A good texture carries three things: crisp edges, colours you can tell apart, and mid-scale disorder. Take away any one of them and the pattern collapses into either a blurry smear or noisy clutter.
What a good texture looks like
Edges leave visible structure along the mirror lines; that is what makes the arms of a kaleidoscope readable. Colour separation gives the pattern depth: two or three strong colours beat thirty washed-out ones. Disorder matters too — a perfectly regular source produces nothing unexpected once it is mirrored.
Surfaces that reliably work
Wet asphalt, oil on water, cracked paint, rust, mossy stone, lace, woven fabric, crumpled foil, frosted glass, soap foam, a slice of citrus and neon signage are the backbone of any collection. Transparent and translucent materials are especially valuable: when lit from behind they leave a stained-glass quality in the pattern.
What to avoid
A flat painted wall, an open sky or a single-colour tabletop almost never work — there is no structure to mirror. Extremely fine, dense patterns (grass from a distance, a tight check) turn into noise. In very low light, sensor noise leaves dirty speckles all over the pattern as well.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a macro lens?
No. Your phone's minimum focus distance covers most textures; a clip-on macro only helps at very small scales.
Can I shoot a screen?
You can, but you may get moiré — a wavy interference pattern. Changing the angle and distance slightly usually clears it.
Is the resolution good enough for print?
More than enough for sharing on screens. For large prints, shoot in plenty of light and export at the highest resolution available.
Can the app's filters rescue a weak texture?
Only partly; a contrast boost can make a faint texture more visible, but it can't replace real structure — the source still needs clear edges.
