Why Does a Kaleidoscope Video Stop After 10 Seconds?
A kaleidoscope video in Pattern: Kaleidoscope Camera stops after about 10 seconds because the app limits each recording to that length. The same limit applies with Pro. A clip that stops near 10 seconds and saves normally has reached the recording limit; a clip that ends earlier or fails to save needs a different check.
What the 10-second limit means
Pattern records individual short clips. When a recording reaches its time limit, the app stops capturing and prepares the video for saving. There is no recording-length setting to increase, and the next recording starts a separate clip rather than continuing the previous file. The limit belongs to Pattern; it does not establish a rule for every kaleidoscope camera app. If your goal is one uninterrupted take longer than 10 seconds, Pattern does not provide that recording option. Plan around separate takes before starting a movement that needs more time.
Does Pro let you record longer?
No. Pro changes available patterns and output options, including watermark removal and higher output quality, but it does not extend recording time. The Pro video setting concerns output quality and frame rate, not clip length. Switching that setting will not turn a short recording into a longer one. Choose Pro for features you actually need rather than expecting it to remove the duration limit. Likewise, changing the pattern, color, or spin speed changes the image, not the amount of time available for a take.
If the recording stops before 10 seconds
First check whether you tapped the capture button again: a second tap ends the recording. Pattern also stops recording when the app becomes hidden, so keep it visible and the screen awake throughout the take. For a useful comparison, start another clip, leave the controls alone, and watch the timer until recording ends. A repeatable stop near the limit is different from an interrupted take. If it still ends early while Pattern stays visible, note the timer reading and any message rather than assuming the 10-second limit explains it.
Check the saved clip in Pattern first
After recording ends, let the app finish preparing the file. The capture button does not start another take during preparation. Look for the video-saved message, then open the album button beside the capture button and select Videos. Open the newest clip and play it through to check the ending. A successful save to Pattern's album is separate from saving a copy to your phone's gallery or Photos. If the clip is in Pattern but missing from the phone's library, open it and use Save, or check the auto-save setting in Profile.
Read an error message differently from a normal stop
A normal time-limit stop should lead to a saved clip, not an error. If Pattern says the take is too short, start another recording and let it run longer before tapping to stop; a quick double tap can end a take almost immediately. If the app says video recording is unavailable on the device, or that it could not start recording, that is a recording problem rather than the duration cap. Record the exact message. Do not treat a missing file as proof that the app successfully recorded the full 10 seconds.
If the app cannot save the recording
If the save-recovery panel appears, use Share to preserve a copy or Try again to attempt the save again. Keep the panel open while dealing with the clip; dismissing it discards the pending recovery copy. A storage failure is separate from reaching the time limit. There is also a limitation for Pro users who enabled Keep source video (editing): retrying a failed save recovers the patterned video without attaching its editing source. If later editing matters, check that Edit is available on the recovered clip before relying on it. A playable video alone does not confirm that its source was preserved.
How to make a longer finished video
Record several separate takes, save the ones you want, and use a separate video editor that supports joining clips to assemble the finished sequence. Pattern does not offer a timeline for joining recordings or a pause-and-resume control for continuing the same take. Give each short clip its own beginning and ending so you can choose where to cut. If you want the scene to appear continuous, keep the phone position and pattern settings consistent between takes, while allowing for the gap between recordings. Exporting clips cannot recover movement that happened during that gap.
When to report a recording problem
Contact support@hugosoftware.net if recordings repeatedly end well before the limit while the app stays visible, the album will not open, or saving keeps failing. Include your phone model, operating system version, Pattern version from Profile, whether Pro is active, and the selected Pro video setting if relevant. Describe the sequence: whether the timer appeared, when it stopped, which message followed, and whether the clip exists in Pattern's album or only fails to reach the phone's gallery. An album-loading failure may leave no explanatory message, so say explicitly if tapping the album does nothing.
| What you notice | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Stops near 10 seconds and saves | Expected recording limit; check the saved ending. |
| Ends early after leaving Pattern | Keep the app visible for the next take. |
| Saved in Pattern, absent from the phone's gallery | Use Save or check auto-save in Profile. |
| Save-recovery panel appears | Preserve the clip with Share or use Try again. |
| Album button does nothing | Report the album-loading problem; do not assume the clips were deleted. |
Frequently asked questions
Can I stop a clip before the limit?
Yes. Tap the capture button once to start recording and again when you want to stop. You do not have to wait for the automatic stop.
Why does a saved video keep playing past 10 seconds?
Pattern's video viewer repeats playback. Watching the same movement again is a loop of the saved clip, not extra footage or a longer recording.
Does every clip have to be exactly 10.000 seconds?
No. Treat 10 seconds as the recording limit, not a promise of an exact exported duration. Pattern's album also rounds its duration labels to whole seconds.
Why is my kaleidoscope video silent?
Pattern records video without microphone audio. Silence is expected and does not mean the clip was cut short or lost its sound during saving.
Why is there no Edit button on my saved video?
Edit requires a saved editing source, with Pro required to use the editor. Enable Keep source video (editing) before recording. It cannot add a missing source to an older clip.
Turn your camera into a kaleidoscope. PATTERN builds a living, fluid symmetry out of one small core square in the middle of your screen. Save photos and videos; nothing leaves your device.
