Where Are Kaleidoscope Photos Saved on Android?
PATTERN saves captures in its own app album; a separate copy goes to Pictures/PATTERN for photos or Movies/PATTERN for videos when you tap Save or enable Auto-save to gallery. Seeing a picture inside the app does not mean it has reached your phone’s gallery. Start by checking the app album, then export the capture if you want to open it elsewhere. These folder paths apply to Pattern: Kaleidoscope Camera on Android.
Find the photo inside PATTERN first
On the camera screen, tap the album button at the bottom left. It shows a thumbnail when a capture is available. The Gallery screen has separate Photos and Videos tabs, so choose Photos when looking for a still image. Open the thumbnail to view the capture. This album holds PATTERN’s local collection; it does not browse every picture on your phone. If you can open the photo here but cannot find it in another photo app, try saving a gallery copy before taking the picture again.
Save one photo or a selection to your gallery
Open a capture in PATTERN and tap Save. Wait for the “Saved to gallery” message, then check your phone’s gallery. For several captures, return to the app’s Gallery screen, tap Select, choose the items, and tap Save. The batch result currently says “added to Photos” on Android too; it refers to the phone’s gallery save, not a Google Photos upload. Check the reported number: it counts successful saves, which may be fewer than the items you selected. If a batch misses an item, open that capture and try Save individually to see its error message.
Turn on automatic gallery copies for future captures
Open Profile and find Auto-save to gallery. Set it to On if you want each new capture added to the phone’s gallery as well as PATTERN’s album. Turning it on does not export the photos already in the app; use Save for those. After your first successful manual save, the app may also ask whether you want automatic saving. If you leave the setting off, you can keep choosing which captures to export. An automatic gallery save can still fail, so pay attention to the result rather than treating the setting as a backup guarantee.
Look in the device folders, not just the camera roll
Exported photos go to Pictures/PATTERN, while exported videos go to Movies/PATTERN. In a file manager, browse those folders in your phone’s internal storage; filenames begin with pattern-. In Google Photos, open Collections, then On this device, and check the device folders for PATTERN. That is Google’s recommended route for finding pictures from other apps. Do not limit your search to the phone camera’s album. If the exported file opens from its folder, the copy exists even if you have not found it in the photo app’s main view.
Read the save message before troubleshooting
“Photo saved” confirms the capture reached PATTERN’s album; it does not by itself confirm a gallery copy. “Saved to gallery” confirms the separate Android save. If automatic saving reports “Saved in PATTERN — couldn’t add it to the gallery,” keep the app copy and retry with Save from its viewer. Share serves a different purpose: it opens the system sharing options with a file copy. Opening or canceling that menu does not confirm that a photo was added to your gallery. Use Save when your goal is a gallery copy.
If saving to the phone’s gallery fails
First check that the capture still opens inside PATTERN, then try Save once more. On Android 7–9, gallery saving requires the older storage permission; if the app reports denied access, allow storage access for PATTERN in the phone’s app settings and retry. On Android 10 and later, PATTERN’s gallery save does not require that legacy permission. Android’s shared media guidance explains this difference. If access is not the issue, check available phone storage. Keep the app copy until you can open the exported file independently.
If the app album will not open
An album that fails to open is different from an album that opens with no photos in it. PATTERN can currently fail to open the album without showing an explanation when its saved collection cannot be read. That behavior alone does not establish that the captures were deleted. Reopen the app and try the album again, then check Pictures/PATTERN and Movies/PATTERN for any earlier exports. Avoid clearing PATTERN’s storage as a troubleshooting shortcut. If the problem continues, contact support@hugosoftware.net with your Android version and whether the album opens, appears empty, or shows thumbnails that will not open.
If the capture could not be saved at all
The “Couldn’t save this capture” panel concerns a failure to save into PATTERN itself. Use Share to send a copy to a destination you choose, or free storage elsewhere and return to Try again. Keep the app open while dealing with that pending capture: dismissing the panel discards it, and closing the app can lose it. Do not clear PATTERN’s data to make room. For a video recorded with Keep source video enabled, retrying a failed save can recover the finished patterned video without its editable source. A recovered video should therefore not be treated as proof that its source was preserved.
Protect the copies before deleting or reinstalling
Deleting a capture inside PATTERN removes its app album entry and any saved editing source; it does not remove a gallery copy you already exported. There is no undo for the app deletion. Before reinstalling or clearing app storage, export the captures you need and open them outside PATTERN. Android warns that Clear storage permanently deletes app data. For cloud backup, separately check Google Photos under Photos settings, Backup, then Back up device folders, and enable the relevant folders if desired. Google’s device folder backup instructions explain the controls. PATTERN’s Auto-save to gallery setting does not configure that backup.
| Copy | Where to look | How it gets there |
|---|---|---|
| App album | PATTERN → Gallery → Photos or Videos | A successful capture save |
| Exported photo | Pictures/PATTERN | Save or Auto-save to gallery |
| Exported video | Movies/PATTERN | Save or Auto-save to gallery |
Frequently asked questions
Why can I see a photo in PATTERN but not in my phone’s gallery?
The app album and the phone’s gallery hold separate copies. Open the photo in PATTERN and tap Save. For future captures, turn on Auto-save to gallery in Profile.
Does turning on Auto-save export my older photos?
No. It applies to new captures. To export existing photos, use Save in the viewer or Select and Save in the app’s Gallery screen.
Does Save upload my photo to Google Photos?
Save writes a copy to the phone’s shared media storage. A cloud upload depends separately on Google Photos backup settings and whether the relevant device folder is included.
Will exported photos remain if I uninstall PATTERN?
Android keeps media saved to shared storage after an app is uninstalled. Check that your photos open from Pictures/PATTERN before uninstalling; do not rely on captures that exist only in the app album.
Can I recover a photo deleted from PATTERN’s album?
PATTERN has no undo for album deletion. Check for a copy you previously saved to the phone’s gallery, backed up, or shared elsewhere before assuming the photo is gone.
Why are my kaleidoscope videos missing from the photo folder?
PATTERN exports videos to Movies/PATTERN rather than Pictures/PATTERN. Inside the app, switch to the Videos tab. A video still in the app can be exported with Save.
Turn your camera into a kaleidoscope. PATTERN builds a living, fluid symmetry out of one small core square in the middle of your screen. Save photos and videos; nothing leaves your device.
