Mirror Lab vs. Pattern: Photo Editor or Live Camera?
Choose Mirror Lab for editing an existing photo with layered effects and undo; choose Pattern: Kaleidoscope Camera for composing a pattern from the live camera and capturing a photo or short video. Pattern can be a Mirror Lab alternative for live pattern capture, but it does not replace the full photo editor. There is an important overlap: Mirror Lab also offers Live Preview. The useful distinction is what you start with and how much editing you need afterward. Pattern is not affiliated with Mirror Lab or Ilixa.
Start with the picture you actually want to use
If your starting point is a photo already on your phone, Mirror Lab lets you open it and work on the image. Pattern’s Android app has no gallery-photo import control. Its web version does let you choose a local photo and move the sampled area around it. That makes the web version an option for experimenting with a saved image, but photo import on the web does not mean the same control exists in the Android app. For an older portrait, landscape, or carefully composed photograph, decide whether you want to edit that composition or sample a small part of it to build a pattern.
Compare editing controls, not just the effect thumbnails
Google Play describes Mirror Lab’s adjustable filters, effect stacking, undo, and brightness, contrast, and saturation controls. Those tools suit a photo you want to revise through several deliberate changes. Pattern concentrates on the sampled core, mirror presets, color shift, and spin. You can drag to reposition the camera’s sampled area and pinch to change its size. The Adjust panel contains color and spin controls, including Drift and Auto. Pattern has no brightness or saturation slider and no editing undo history. If a source needs tonal correction, its color shift control will not do the same job.
What choosing the camera workflow means
In Pattern, you compose while watching the pattern respond to the camera. Select a preset from the strip near the bottom, adjust the core, and switch between Photo and Video before using the shutter. Freeze holds the view when you find a composition you want to capture. This workflow suits a subject you can still point the phone at and move around. Mirror Lab’s App Store description explicitly includes real-time Live Preview, so camera access alone is not a reason to switch. Try the framing controls and judge which interaction helps you reach the composition you want.
Decide where the movement should come from
Mirror Lab supports animation between keyframes; Ilixa’s site places keyframe video animation in PRO. That suits a planned change in effect settings. Pattern records the changing pattern as you shoot, including movement from the camera view and automatic spin or color drift. Each recording stops at about 10 seconds, including with Pro, and the video has no microphone audio. Pattern does not offer a keyframe animation editor. Choose according to whether you want to design transitions between settings or capture movement as it happens. If your project needs narration or a longer finished sequence, plan a separate editing step.
Pattern’s saved-source editing has a condition
Pattern Pro can revisit a camera video when Keep source video (editing) was enabled in Profile before recording. This also stores unfiltered camera footage on the device and uses additional space. Open a recording with a saved source in the app’s Gallery and choose Edit to change its pattern or color, then capture a new result. This is not a general photo or video import tool, and switching the setting on later cannot restore the source of an earlier recording. Source saving can fail while the finished pattern video is preserved, so confirm that Edit appears before relying on a clip for later changes.
Check framing and the exported file
Pattern captures the full drawing area at its screen proportions. Its store description mentions square, portrait, and landscape capture options, but the app has no capture-ratio selector. A separate 9:16 sharing copy is available; that does not change the original capture’s proportions. If you need an exact square canvas, allow for another editing step. Ilixa’s site lists custom aspect ratios under Mirror Lab MAX and lossless PNG output under PRO. Before choosing a paid tier, save a representative result and check the actual file’s dimensions, framing, and format. A preview that looks right does not settle those requirements.
Separate free access from paid tools
Mirror Lab is available on Android, iPhone, and iPad. It is free to download, and Ilixa describes PRO and MAX as one-time purchases; check Google Play or the App Store for current local prices and the relevant upgrade. Pattern’s free Android presets include Radial and Grid with six or eight segments. Pro adds the locked presets, watermark-free output, and saved-source editing. Pattern offers subscriptions and an Android lifetime purchase, with available offers shown in the purchase screen. Start by checking whether the free controls meet your needs, then confirm that the specific export or editing feature you need belongs to the offer you select.
Make the choice with one real task
Pick one result you actually need: a revised photograph, a new live pattern photo, or a short moving pattern. Set a requirement before opening either app, such as keeping a recognizable subject, changing a pattern after capture, or delivering a square image. Then follow that task through to the saved file. Compare the adjustments you needed, any extra editing step, and whether the file meets your requirement. This gives you a practical reason to keep one app or use both. A familiar effect thumbnail is less useful than knowing that the entire path from your source to your finished file works for your project.

Frequently asked questions
Is Pattern a replacement for every Mirror Lab feature?
No. It is an option for live kaleidoscope capture. Pattern does not provide the broader photo-editing workflow, stacked effects, or undo history described in Mirror Lab’s Google Play listing.
Can I open a photo from my gallery in Pattern?
You can choose a local photo in Pattern’s web version. The Android app does not offer that photo-import control. Its Gallery is for viewing and managing Pattern captures.
Does Mirror Lab work only with saved photos?
No. Ilixa’s site includes camera capture, and the App Store description advertises Live Preview. Check the controls on your platform if a particular camera function is essential.
Can I change any Pattern video after recording it?
Only recordings with a successfully saved source support that editing route. Enable Keep source video (editing) before shooting with Pro, then confirm the recording has an Edit option.
Will Pattern Pro record longer videos?
No. The approximately 10-second recording limit applies with Pro too. Choose Pro for its additional tools and output options rather than expecting a longer recording duration.
Turn your camera into a kaleidoscope. PATTERN builds a living, fluid symmetry out of one small core square in the middle of your screen. Save photos and videos; nothing leaves your device.
