How to Make a Kaleidoscope Video

To make a kaleidoscope video in Pattern: Kaleidoscope Camera, start the camera, choose a pattern, select Video, and tap the center record button; tap again to stop. The app records a silent clip of up to 10 seconds. You can then review it in Pattern’s Gallery and save or share it.

1. Start the live camera effect

Open Pattern and tap Start camera if the camera permission card appears, then allow camera access. Point your phone at something nearby and move it slightly: the pattern should respond to what the camera sees. A moving pattern alone does not confirm that the camera is running, because Pattern also has a demo texture. If camera access fails, the app shows the permission card again so you can retry. This workflow creates the kaleidoscope video effect inside Pattern, where you can preview the result before recording.

2. Choose the pattern and frame your clip

Use the preview strip above the Video and Photo buttons to select a pattern. Radial 6 or Radial 8 is a starting point available without Pro; options marked with a star require Pro. Watch the CORE square as you frame the shot: that is the camera region feeding the repeated pattern. Drag on the preview to shift the sampled area, pinch to resize the core, or double-tap to center it again. Settle on the framing before recording. The saved video contains the pattern without the CORE outline or app buttons.

3. Set the movement before you record

Scroll to Adjust at the end of the pattern strip to open Color & spin. Auto switches automatic rotation on or off, and the Spin slider changes its speed. Drift makes the colors change over time; leave it off if you want to keep your chosen color setting. For a first take, try one kind of movement at a time: either move the phone slowly with Auto off, or hold the phone still with Auto on. Close the panel when you are ready. If the preview says Frozen, tap that control to resume live movement.

4. Record a short take

Select Video, then tap the large center button once to start. A timer appears, and most controls disappear while recording. Follow the movement you rehearsed, then tap the same button again to stop; Pattern also stops automatically at its 10-second limit. As a practice exercise, aim for a few seconds of one continuous movement rather than several quick changes. Keep the app visible until the recording finishes, since switching away ends an active recording. Wait for the saved confirmation before starting another take. If you stop almost immediately, the app may reject the clip as too short.

5. Review it and save a copy to your phone

If a Pro offer appears after your first capture, close it to return to the camera and album. Tap the album thumbnail at the lower left, open the Videos tab if needed, and select the clip to review it. Video saved means the recording has been stored in Pattern’s own Gallery; it does not by itself confirm a copy in your phone’s photo library. In the mobile app’s viewer, tap Save to add that copy. Android uses the device gallery, while iOS uses Photos. After your first successful manual save, the app may ask whether to save future captures automatically. You can change that choice in Profile. Check the destination library before relying on the extra copy.

6. Share the original or a separate 9:16 copy

Tap Share beside the latest capture or in the video viewer. Original shares the recorded file. The other option, For Instagram / WhatsApp · 9:16, prepares a separate vertical copy before opening the system share sheet. The original recording follows the full-screen preview’s proportions; there is no capture-time selector for square, 9:16, or 16:9, despite that claim in the store description. The 9:16 sharing option does not change the original. Choose it when you need that shape, and wait for preparation to finish before choosing a destination.

7. Keep the source only if you want to edit later

For later pattern changes, Pro users can enable Keep source video (editing) in Profile before shooting. This stores an additional unprocessed camera video and the settings needed to recreate the effect, using extra device storage. It is off by default. When a source was successfully saved, the clip’s viewer offers Edit: you can change the pattern, color, or output quality, then select Video and tap the record button to create another version. The original remains in the album. Turning source retention on afterward cannot recover the camera footage for a clip already recorded without it.

8. Treat quality labels as targets

Standard recording is available without Pro and includes a watermark. Pro removes the watermark and provides higher output targets, but the result depends on the device. In particular, the Profile label 4K · 30 does not reflect every fallback: the recording profile can use a lower resolution while that label stays the same. Smooth · 60 is another Pro recording mode, rather than a guarantee that every phone will deliver that frame rate. Make a short test and check the saved file’s properties if dimensions or frame rate matter for your project.

9. Handle a save problem before leaving the screen

If Pattern shows Couldn’t save this capture, use Share to preserve the clip elsewhere, or free device storage and tap Try again. Keep the recovery panel open until you have done one of those; dismissing it discards the pending capture. There is a remaining limitation for source-enabled recordings: retrying a failed album save restores the patterned video without restoring its editing source. A recovered clip may therefore lack Edit even though source retention was on. If the clip is already in Pattern but Save to the phone library fails, check the permission message and retry that separate export.

Frequently asked questions

Does Pattern record sound?

No. Pattern records the animated pattern without microphone audio. If your finished video needs narration, music, or ambient sound, add it afterward in a separate video editor.

Can I record for longer than 10 seconds?

Not in one take. The recorder stops at 10 seconds, including with Pro. For a longer sequence, record separate clips and join them in another editor.

Do I need to use screen recording?

No. Use Pattern’s Video mode and center record button. Its recorder captures the rendered pattern directly, leaving the interface and CORE frame out of the saved file.

Why is the pattern still when I record?

Check whether Frozen is active before you start. Freeze holds the camera image and stops automatic rotation and color drift. With Freeze off, try enabling Auto in Adjust or moving the phone while watching the preview.

Will the beginning and end form a seamless loop?

Pattern repeats playback in its viewer, but it does not automatically match the first and last frames. Review the transition and use a separate editor if you need a seamless loop.

Why is my video missing from the phone gallery?

First look in Pattern’s Gallery. Unless automatic saving is enabled, you need to open the clip and tap Save to create the phone-library copy. If export fails, follow the displayed storage or Photos permission message.

Turn your camera into a kaleidoscope. PATTERN builds a living, fluid symmetry out of one small core square in the middle of your screen. Save photos and videos; nothing leaves your device.
